Range hoods are the most ignored appliance in most kitchens. They quietly accumulate grease until the fan motor seizes, the lights stop working, and the kitchen fills with smoke during a Saturday-night fry. Most hood failures we see are bad switches. The hot, greasy environment is hard on the contacts. We replace OE or with a universal slide switch where available.
If you have not cleaned the grease filters in years, the blower has too. Eventually the bearings give out. We pull the blower assembly, clean the housing, and replace the motor.
The lighting socket on most under-cabinet hoods corrodes from grease vapor. Sometimes replacing the bulb is not enough; we replace the socket. On halogen models the transformer is also a suspect.
Jenn-Air and Whirlpool downdraft vents have a lifting motor that lives under the cooktop. Failures show as the vent stuck up, stuck down, or making a grinding noise. We replace the motor and clean the rail.
The ducting from the hood to the outside is undersized or kinked, the cap on the roof is clogged, or the blower wheel is caked with grease. We inspect with a borescope and clear or replace where needed.
