We get a lot of questions about what a refrigerator repair visit actually involves. Here's a clear walkthrough of the process, the most common parts we replace, and how we think through repair vs. replace decisions.
Every refrigerator call starts the same way: we ask about the symptom over the phone, narrow down likely causes, and schedule a visit. On site, the technician inspects the unit, runs tests on the suspect components, and gives you a written diagnosis before any repair work begins. You approve the repair in writing before we touch anything further.
If you decide not to move forward with the repair, you keep the written diagnosis — useful information whether you repair it yourself, get a second opinion, or decide to replace the unit.
From our 2024-2025 service calls across Nash and Edgecombe counties, here's what we replace most often, ranked by frequency:
Samsung and LG OEM parts are consistently more expensive than equivalent Whirlpool, Maytag, or GE parts for the same functional component. The labor time is similar — the difference is in parts sourcing.
This is a factor in repair-vs-replace thinking for older Samsung and LG units, but for units under 8 years old, repair is almost always still the right call — these are excellent refrigerators with genuine design advantages.
Compressor replacement is our most involved refrigerator repair. It makes sense when the refrigerator is under 10 years old, when it's a quality brand, and when the rest of the unit is in good condition.
For premium built-in brands like Sub-Zero or Thermador, compressor repair almost always makes sense given how expensive these units are to replace. For older standard refrigerators, we evaluate case by case and give you an honest recommendation.
LG linear compressor exception: LG refrigerators from 2014-2019 with known linear compressor issues may still have manufacturer remedy options — we advise on this before recommending repair.
